Scam warning
Published: 25 June 2026
A warning has been issued to computer users about a new “Click Fix Scam” designed to trick people into thinking they are solving a problem by copying and pasting something which actually enables the computer to be hacked.
The scam begins either with a pop-up screen advising the user they have a virus and that Google Chrome needs to be repaired, or a Windows security alert saying them they must complete a verification step. The scammer then tells the person to copy and paste a code into their computer – if they do, malware can be installed, passwords stolen, bank details accessed, or scammers can access the computer.
The advice is that, if a random web site or pop-up says to copy and paste anything, to run commands, or to fix something manually, it is likely to be a scam so the user should stop immediately.
