Emergency alerts system test

Published: 19 August 2025

At 3.00pm on Sunday 7 September, the government will test the Emergency Alerts system. Compatible mobile phones and tablets will receive an alert, make a loud siren-like sound and vibrate. No action needs to be taken.

The Emergency Alerts system is used to warn if there’s a danger to life nearby, including extreme weather.

Whilst the alerts are intended to protect the public in emergencies, they could put victims/survivors of domestic abuse at risk, particularly those who rely on hidden phones as part of their safety plan.

It is possible to opt out of receiving the alerts by turning “emergency alerts” off in a mobile’s settings.

More information may be found on the government’s web site.
