New smart electricity meters

Published: 28 January 2026

Old Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) meters are being phased out across the UK and replaced with new smart meters.

RTS meters are typically used in:

  • homes without gas
  • properties using storage heaters
  • where there’s dual-tariff electricity (cheaper overnight rates)

If RTS meters are not upgraded, properties could lose access to heating or hot water when the signal is switched off.

Energy suppliers will contact affect households and an installation needs to be booked. West Berkshire Council can be contacted to check if a message is genuine.
